In January we provided our industry outlook on what Cannabis businesses could expect in the coming year. Just a few weeks into 2017, and we are already watching some these predictions come to light. The numbers are in, and Colorado officially sold $1.3 billion  in medical and recreational marijuana in 2016. The state brought in roughly $199 million in taxes and fees, revenue put toward education, public health and law enforcement. CBA Releases Statement on Richard Kirk:

On February 3, 2017 The Cannabis Business Alliance (CBA) released a statement regarding the case against Richard Kirk, who has pled guilty to second-degree murder after confessing to the murder of his wife Kristine Kirk. Much of the news coverage attempted to connect the tragedy to the consumption of a cannabis infused edible.

CBA Releases Statement In Response to Gov. Hickenlooper’s Visit with CA Lawmakers:

In response to Gov. Hickenlooper’s recent visit to speak with California legislators in Sacramento, Calif., in advance of legalization of adult-use cannabis, The Cannabis Business Alliance (CBA)  has released a statement. The advocate for cannabis business owners is calling on states like California and other emerging markets to reach out to those who have been involved in Colorado's cannabis industry for insight on what works best when it comes to regulation and child safety.

“What’s Happening on The Hill” Legislative Update:

  • Medical Marijuana License Issues (HB17-1023): Passed the House with the MIP to MIP transfer language the CBA proposed. It has since been introduced in the Senate, and is sponsored by Senator Baumgardner.
  • Unlawful Marijuana Advertising Bill (SB17-015): Passed the Senate and is now in the House. Makes sure MIPs/testing facilities in advertising.

  • Allow Medical MJ Use For Stress Disorders Bill (SB17-017): Passed out of Senate during the week of February 6 and should be introduced in the House early week of February 13.

  • The Marijuana Education Materials Resource Bank Bill (SB17-025): Has been introduced in the House, has not been calendared for committee yet, but hopefully will be in the next couple of weeks.

  • Marijuana Shortfalls (SB17-11): Passed unanimously out of the Senate Business Affairs Committee and will next be heard in the Finance Committee.

  • Currently awaiting introduction of the Business Efficiency Bill

  • The new Public Consumption Bill was introduced and is now on our tracking sheet.
